Dear Gazette,
It is clear to me that Lara Nieberding in her letter regarding Christian’s and homosexuality in the March 3 issue of the Gazette, “Divorce, gluttony listed with homosexuality” does not realize that Christians are not the only ones who believe homosexuality is immoral. In fact, every major religion considers homosexuality immoral - Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, etc. In some countries where Christianity is not the dominant religion or even an accepted religion, homosexuality is punishable by death. In these same countries, confessing Christianity is punishable by death. Is Ms. Nieberding upset by those facts? I find it curious that she only attacks Christians. I also find it curious that she does not address the many reasons for not allowing homosexuals to marry that have nothing to do with religion. She prefers to level irresponsible and unfounded accusations like, “Christians want to deny the small percentage of homosexuals in committed relationships healthcare.” Every single American has access to health care, and Christians have never attempted to change that.
Also, Ms. Nieberding seems to be saying that unless Christians are perfect, they should be silent - “Litigate, lobby judge against your own sin first before you judge, lobby and litigate the sin of others.” Are Christians the only ones held to such a high standard before they are allowed to point out problems? I wonder if Ms. Nieberding is perfect? She certainly feels free to judge, insult, and criticize Christians. Perhaps hypocrites are not found only among Christians?
I think it is shameful that many so called “Christians” divorce, commit adultery, and do any number of immoral things. This just demonstrates that many who claim to follow Christ really are not Christians. Unfortunately, Ms. Nieberding does not appear to understand Christianity either. It is not based on how good we are but on what Jesus did for us, because we cannot be good enough. True Christians do practice what they preach: If you are willing to recognize you are hopelessly lost in sin and not able to get to heaven based on your record, turn from your sinful ways and trust that Jesus took the punishment for you by dying on the cross.
